We have all heard the stories and seen movies about Charles Lindbergh’s flight across the Atlantic in 1927. Did you know that six other men lost their lives and disappeared while trying to achieve the first long distance flight? I didn’t either.

I was watching the old Jimmy Stewart movie called the Spirit of St. Louis. He completed his task and followed his dreams; although Lucky Lindy had investor’s who paid for the specially made airplane; they also shared Lindbergh’s flying passion.

During his 33 hour flight (Charles had estimated 40 hours); Mr. Lindbergh reminisced and sometimes hallucinated about his early flying days. He even gave flying lessons and rides to people in a dilapidated plane.

In the movie, Charles happened to give a Minister flying lessons. After several frustrating attempts to teach the Minister how to land a plane, Lucky Lindy took over and landed the plane himself. I’m going to write a quote about the movie – (this quote may not be exact). When they finally reached the ground, Lindy said to the Minister: It’s no use – you just cannot learn to land this plane. The Minister in his simple wisdom said: “does it matter as long as I am paying you. I like to be up in the air – I feel closer to God up there (pointing to the sky).

The minister asked Lindy how come he never saw Charles at church. Lindy answered that he believes only in things seen, like his instrument panel and things he could touch, like his joy-stick. Lindy said I can’t touch God. Bless the minister’s heart because he could have given Lindy a sermon. Instead the minister said: You are not supposed to touch God; He is supposed to touch you.

How many times have you tried to land your life’s plane? How many times have you crashed and burned? When you finally reach the ground, are you frustrated, give up and say; it’s no use! Does it matter that Jesus already paid the price for you to be UP in the air feeling closer to your Father? No, we can’t touch God. We can’t see God but Jesus leads us to level ground.

Psalm 143 7-10: Answer me quickly, LORD; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Rescue me from my enemies, LORD, for I hide myself in you. Teach me to do your will, for you are my God; may your good Spirit lead me on level ground.

I am ending this story in prayer:

May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and He will do it. (1 Thessalonians 5: 23-24).
